Description

Broad Peak earned its name due to the expansive width of its summit, but locals refer to it as Falchan Kangri. Standing at a height of 8,047m/26,401ft, it is often likened to the triple-headed Breithorn, a peak in the European Alps that stands at 4,165m high. The ascent from the base camp on the West Spur involves a climb of more than 3,150 meters, with the North Ridge presenting scrambling weaves of snow and rock leading to the crest of the Spur. Beyond this point, the route traverses entirely over glacier terrain, occasionally encountering ice walls exceeding 7,500 meters. A clearly defined route leads from the Col at 7,800 meters to the summit.

An Austrian Expedition, under the leadership of Marcus Schmuck, achieved the summit via the West Face and North Ridge without the use of supplemental oxygen on June 9, 1957. The successful climbers included Marcus Schmuck, Fritz Wintersteller, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl.
