Itinerary

Embark on a scenic drive towards Hunza along the Karakoram Highway, making a memorable stop at the Rakaposhi viewpoint. Here, marvel at the awe-inspiring North Face of Rakaposhi, known as the longest uninterrupted rise on Earth, spanning an impressive 6000 meters from the riverbank to the summit. After a refreshing snack break, embark on a trek towards the Japanese base camp, tracing the path alongside the majestic Rakaposhi Glacier. The ascent may take a maximum of 4 hours, with a descent of 2 hours back to the starting point. Return in the late afternoon and continue the journey to Minapin, nestled in the scenic Nagar Valley. Spend the night in a cozy local lodge or guest house, immersing yourself in the charm of one of Nagar Valley's most picturesque villages.

Commence your journey from Minapin, tracing the course of the Minapin River. As the trail veers southward, it traverses a footbridge and ascends 183 meters through switchbacks before leveling off and leading into a serene juniper forest. Follow the trail further, gradually ascending until reaching the huts at Bang-i-das, nestled alongside a crystal-clear stream. Continuing along the path, you'll encounter a fork leading to the verdant grassy meadow of Hapakun (2810m), surrounded by majestic stands of fir trees. Spend the night camping amidst this tranquil natural setting.

This morning, proceed along a trail that runs perpendicular to the water channel, ascending through dusty switchbacks to reach a lush bowl-shaped terrain. As you continue, the trail winds along a rocky cliff, offering breathtaking views of the rugged and fractured Minapin Glacier below, until reaching Tagaphari (3260m). Formerly a muddy lake, Tagaphari now presents itself as a flat pasture where cattle graze peacefully. Grassy campgrounds are scattered along the meandering stream, while a small seasonal spring awaits at the base of the rocky slope towards the head of this quaint valley. Spend the night camping amidst this serene landscape.

The journey from Tagaphari to Diran Base Camp presents a demanding and challenging round-trip trek, necessitating the traversal of the heavily crevassed Minapin glacier. The trail begins with a steep descent to the glacier, lasting 2 to 3 hours, followed by an immediate ascent and traverse across the glacier, requiring an additional 3 hours one-way. Situated at 3700m, the Diran Peak base camp is identifiable by a small green meadow. After a brief respite, return along the same path. Alternatively, for those opting out of this strenuous hike, there are various smaller side trips available. Spend the night camping at the base camp.

We will retrace our steps along the same trail, passing through the scenic Hapakun meadow, until we reach Minapin. Spend the night in a lodge or guest house in Minapin.

Begin your day by departing from Minapin to reconnect with the Karakoram Highway leading to Gilgit. Upon arrival in Gilgit, you will be transferred to your chosen lodging establishment. Alternatively, you have the option to proceed to Gulmit and participate in the Patundas Meadow trek in Upper Hunza.
